The Arcata & Mad River began service in 1854 on Humboldt Bay, California. Its gauge: 42-1/2". Motive Power: “Spanking Fury”, one horsepower exactly. By the 1890’s steam powered and still narrow gauge, it had evolved into a logging and lumber road owned by the champagne-making Korbel family. Two Korbel nieces, Annie and Mary, became favorites of the railroaders. Hence the nickname: Annie & Mary. The road’s logo enshrines their memory.
